jimmydaperv, in feedlot dairies cows are generally not allowed any free space to roam and many never see the outside world. They are packed in as tightly as possible which leads to increased disease and infections. To combat sickness, the cattle are fed massive amounts of antibiotics. This leads to the creation of super-bugs, bacteria that have evolved to be immune to the effects of anti-biotics, often multiple drugs because the cows are fed a cocktail of antibiotics. MRSA is a well-known example of this. MRSA can be fatal if left untreated and sometimes even when it is treated. Katie Couric just did an excellent report on this, I recommend it.

On the more humane side, these are animals that provide us with great benefit (unless like me you are lactose intolerant) they should be treated humanely. Animals that have access to the outdoors, clean ground over which to roam, and the ability to get some kind of exercise, are healthier and produce more milk without more drugs being shoveled into their food.

There are many reasons that this kind of agriculture, ranching, whatever, are unsustainable and ethically questionable, I have only hit on a few that I find particularly interesting.
